To “Focus In”

I don’t know about you, but I’ve tried just about anything to keep myself focused on a specific novel I’m writing.

I’ve tried: outlining chapter by chapter, driving around to clear head, listening to ASMR, watching movies to “hear” a character’s voice…..on and on and on!

When you aren’t connecting with a certain character’s voice, it can be the hardest thing to snap yourself back into your novel! For context, I’m halfway through my next full length and I’ve REALLY struggled. But now I feel like I’m finally on track. I’ve wasted time building a playlist for these two- fully intent on using it as a tool to help me write. And it seems to be working!

Connecting to your character offers authenticity and fleshes a person out so they aren’t flat. Obviously I can’t speak for every writer, but if I can’t hear my character saying it in my head, it doesn’t feel like them. Am I putting too much thought into this?

What are some of the tools you use to connect to your characters and fully hear their voice?
